A Child’s Dream will host a free program for teens between the ages of fourteen and nineteen years of age on Saturday, May 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westside Regional Center which is located at 5901 Green Valley Cir No. 320, Culver City.

A panel of four speakers will explain and discuss in detail some common mental health facts as well as myths about mental health. The program is entitled “Mental Health Facts vs. Myth Statements”.

A Child’s Dream is a nonprofit organization that has been a member of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce since 2016. It has been meeting the needs of teens since then, specifically underprivileged young adults by providing school supplies and mentoring at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Culver City.

Founder and President, Cassandra Steptoe-Sampson stated that the theme of the event is: “Is it me or am I Trippin?” She explained that she wanted to “make it relatable to the teens in attendance and to provide a safe atmosphere in which to bring attention to the common mental health topics that plague many young people.”

This program is the third in a series of five events called “Own Your Future.” Those who attend and participate in all five of the events will receive a $200 grant towards furthering their education. One lucky individual who makes the most progress towards achieving their education goal will receive a $1,000 grant. Teens would also be encouraged to learn to mentor other teens.

A script will be provided for teens who are interested in participating in up to five different skits. Topics such as; peer pressure, depression, rejection, and other related subjects will be covered. The objective of each of the skits it to raise awareness of mental health challenges and possible solutions.

Sampson stated that the objective is that “students will (learn to) respond in a helpful way to someone struggling with a mental health challenge.”
