Byte to Byte, located behind an unassuming storefront on Sepulveda, is one of those increasingly popular multi-business kitchens. There’s a code to scan on a board outside, from which you can order your food and then simply pick it up. Those that are less tech dependent can walk in and order 4something, but the menus are nowhere to be found and it’s a far more confusing endeavor.

So, as the umbrella business’ name would suggest, this is a tech-friendly business. It makes ordering food of different styles easy, in one location, for those who know how to handle an iPhone. If you don’t, it’s probably not for you. Mind you, the vinyl records decorating the wall do offer something interesting to look at while you wait.

We faced an issue when we were asked for a delivery address on the app, but we wanted to pick up our food. So despite doing everything correctly, we still had to walk in and order our food at the counter, using the online menu.

Enough with the tech info though, and onto the food. We chose from the LA Greens menu, a range of salads as we continue with our healthy diet (at least until the holidays). We did notice that some of the same dishes appear on multiple menus. For example, some of the salads on the LA Greens also appear on the I Am A Vegan menu. So there’s some cross-pollination going on.

We picked the Grilled Veggie Chopped Salad, and were happy with the choice. A bed of fresh, crisp mixed greens is topped with chickpeas, broccoli and tomato, plus shredded mozzarella and strips of provolone. There’s quite a lot of cheese, but it’s easy to put to the side if you prefer.

The grilled vegetables mentioned in the title of the dish are squash, zucchini and mushroom and, while they’re a little tight with the portions of those things ( a little balance with the cheese would be perfect), they taste great. Not too soggy, and with that delicious charred flavor that puts veg on the edge of caramelization.

Finally, it comes with a tangy red wine vinaigrette on the side, so you can add or dip at your own pleasure.

The salad is a salad, and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. In the future, we’ll be looking to try some of Byte to Byte’s other brands, such as Hollywood Wraps, Chuck’s Chicken & Waffles, or the insanely named Burger B**ch. Just be sure to have your phone ready.
