Mounting injuries forced Culver City High School’s head varsity baseball coach Rick Prieto to shuffle his lineup during the Ocean League season, putting some players into unfamiliar defensive positions. Feeding off the adversity, the Centaurs finished a respectable second place and won three rounds of the CIF championships, advancing to the semifinals, before bowing out to Woodbridge of Irvine, 2-1.

“They are baseball players. They ought to be able to play any position, and they showed they could,” said Prieto.

Prieto takes that same mindset into his Fundamentals of Baseball Summer Camp, which starts Monday at the Culver City High School baseball field. “Our coaching staff will guide these youngsters into well-rounded baseball players,” he said, adding, “Camp coaches are current and former Centaur teammates.”

The camp is designed to cover basics skills in throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, bunting, base running and instructional games, according to Prieto.

“The low coach to player ratio ensures that each player will receive personal attention while having fun and improving their baseball skills,” the coach said.

Session dates are June 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, July 18-22, and July 25-29. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fees for a five-day session are $135.
