We The Folk get traditional at the Cinema Bar

Local Latin-folk band We the Folk used to perform every Sunday at the Culver Hotel, entertaining guests and fans with their lively, vivacious and fun take on the folk genre. This week, they will play at the Cinema Bar and mainman David Villafaña told the News about what Culver City can expect…

When did you start playing and performing?

I started performing in Los Angeles back in 2011, when I was still studying at UCLA. I studied Ethnomusicology, a concentration in Latin Folk.

Describe your sound…

My sound has always been a fusion of traditional Latin styles, like boleros, rancheras, cumbias with a sprinkle of indie rock and soul.

What are your career highlights so far?

I’ve been able to play venues like the Troubadour, perform for the Latin Grammy pre-shows, and various showcases around town.

What recorded music is available — particularly the most recent?
I’m working on recording my first solo album. We The Folk recorded a live studio album available online.

Have you performed at Cinema Bar before? Any memories?

I have never performed at the Cinema, so this will be our first time. I really enjoy the room and the music community that comes out to the venue. I play regularly at the Seventy7 Lounge in downtown Culver City every Thursday night from 9 p.m. to midnight, no cover.

What can the audience expect from the set this time?

Looking forward to being a part of a growing music scene on the west side. I think the Cinema Bar has a lot to offer as a space, and the location is great too. Plenty of parking.

David V with We The Folk performs at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20 at the Cinema Bar. Go to thecinemabar.com for more information about the show.
