Blues-jazz ensemble The Aristocats perform at Boulevard Music this week, so drummer Paul Kreibich told the News about what they have in store for Culver City…

When and how did you start playing, writing and performing?

The Aristocats are: David Marcus-guitar, Bobby Pierce-organ, vocals, and Paul Kreibich-drums. Sinclair Lott splits the drum chair.. The band was formed about five years ago by David. We had a four-night-a-week gig for about three years and got really tight.

Describe your sound…

It’s a classic organ/ guitar jazz trio with lot’s of blues flavor. Bobby Pierce is from Columbus, Ohio and is part of the original heritage of great Hammond B3 organists like Jimmy smith and Jack McDuff. David is an established jazz guitarist and producer. Our special guest will be Chris Smith on Harmonica.

What are your career highlights so far?

We’re all long time pro’s with collective credits including Ray Charles, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Carmen McRae, Anita O’Day, Ernistine Anderson, James Moody, Phil Woods, and many more.

Do you have any recorded music available?

Yes, it’s available on our website, aristocats.net.

Have you performed at Boulevard before? Any memories?

This is our first concert at Boulevard. Chris Smith teaches harmonica at Boulevard and I teach drums there.

What can we expect from the set this time?

Swinging, bluesy jazz and tunes with a Brazilian flavor. The band can get funky, too, and Bobby is a soulful singer. The jazz harmonica of Chris will provide a unique touch to the sound.

What else do you have coming up?

The Aristocats are playing in Las Vegas at Maxan Jazz on March 13th and 14th. We also have a steady Thursday gig at Sogna Toscana in Santa Monica.

The Aristocats and Chris Smith perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 at Boulevard Music. More info on the show at boulevardmusic.com.
