Football season is around the corner and that means summer works are here. What the players and coaches do in the summer puts the team on the right track for success in the fall. When the Friday night lights come on you had better be ready.
This week the work outs swung into hear gear on the Culver City High School football field. It looks like senior leadership will be the key to the Centaurs having a beneficial season. “Everything is going well,” said Culver City head coach Jahmal Wright last Tuesday after their passing league scrimmage against Loyola High School at Culver City.
“We are two weeks into our summer workouts, and the team is working hard,” said Wright. “We have a lot of senior leadership and experience coming back this year. We are excited and looking forward to the 2026 season.”
Heading the list of experienced players is quarterback Nicholas Hoang. He is a returning starter that looks bigger and stronger. “Everything starts with Nicholas,” said Wright. “He does not really lead with words. He is a quiet leader, but he definitely commands the respect of the team. Also, linebacker Damarion Boyd and lineman Kem Anuluoha are our other top leaders, and our vocal leader is a two-way player, Evan Powell. Those seniors have taken the reigns and have become outstanding leaders.”
Wright is also looking for receivers Kristopher McKay and Jo’el La Foe, linemen Jalen Gallaway, Derrick Clark-Saig and Jerrold (Justus) Ivery to provide leadership for the younger members of the football team. McKay also has a grade point average of 4.2.
The Centaurs will host their own passing league tournament on Saturday, July 11, at 9 a.m.
