St. Bernard High’s Altergott receives Teacher Eddy Award

St. Bernard High School’s Jennifer Altergott is the 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year. Altergott was recognized May 10 at the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce Eddy Awards at the LAX Hilton Hotel. The Eddy recognizes true excellence in local educators.
The LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce began honoring teachers with Eddy awards back in 1983. The ceremony has grown through the years and now has been dubbed the “The Oscars” for education.
Altergott teaches Lab Biology and A.P. Environmental Science. She joined the St. Bernard staff in the fall of 2010. Alterwgott received her B.S. in Biology from Loyola Marymount University, and a M.S. in Biology from UCLA. She formerly worked as an ecologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“Whenever I pass Mrs. Altergott’s room I witness learning,” Principal Dr. Patrick Lynch said. “Hands are raised or heads are buried deep in projects or lab work. Often lively laughter fills the air amid the anxious chatter of students asking questions or working together. Mrs. Altergott brings a positive energy and generous insight to her classes. Our students benefit daily. We are so happy she teaches here.”
Respected and admired by both students and staff,
Altergott is one of the teachers featured in the
new documentary about St. Bernard’s single-gender
STEM program, “Balancing the Odds,” by award-winning filmmaker Varda Bar-Kar. The film highlights how education can close the U.S. gender gap in STEM careers through an innovative curriculum, developed around single-gender science and math classes.
