Funky Folk-rock band The Primo Dons perform at the Cinema Bar this week, so band member Beto Calle told the News about what they have in store for Culver City…
When did you start playing and performing? When did the band form?
The band formed a few years ago. Some of us have been playing together since the 80’s. My musical partner Joey “Deluxe” Merholz and I started the band after getting into ukulele.
Describe your sound…
We specialize in intimate, lyric driven performances at low to medium volume depending on the venue. I like to call it: Topical, Tropical, Funky, Folkrock. We also write and sing in Spanish.
What are your career highlights so far?
Still getting our ya-yas out!
What recorded music is available?
I am currently recording. There will be new and older material available. Look up Bob Street.
Have you performed at Cinema Bar before?
Some of us have been playing The Cinema for 30 years give or take. Joey Deluxe (U-bass) and Mike Sauer (drums) and I were in a band together called The Low Tide 5 which played there regularly. So many great memories. Love The Cinema!
What can we expect from the set this time?
You can expect an intimate show at a wonderfully intimate space at an appropriate volume. We will play original tunes and creatively curated covers. Also in the band, from The Ooks of Hazard we have Ed Marshall on assorted ukes and Kate Nicholson on vocals, ukulele and percussion.
Oh, and I’m Bob Street aka “Beto Calle” on lead vocals, uke and percussion.
What else do you have coming up?
We also play at Nalu Vida on Venice Beach by the pier at 1 Washington Blvd on the first Wednesday monthly.
