At the City Council meeting on the evening of Monday, February 23, Action Item 3 (A3) called for, “(1) Discussion of Options for City Council Participation in Preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics; and (2) If Desired, Retention of the Existing Ad Hoc 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics Preparation Subcommittee and Consideration of Appointments thereto; or (3) If Desired, Appointment of One Member of City Council to Work with City Staff on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics Preparation.”

This issue was raised due to Council Member Dan O’Brien’s new position as President and CEO of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce. Council Member Yasmine-Imani McMorrin raised concerns that there could be a conflict of interest.

At Monday’s meeting, many members of the public came out to support O’Brien, though his character was never in question and the questions were surely appropriate.

McMorrin raised the motion of Option 3, which reads, “Bi-Weekly or Monthly Reports at City Council Meetings: If desired, City Council could direct City staff to put a regular item on the City Council agenda on a bi-weekly or monthly basis to provide an update to City Council on preparation activities and receive feedback from the full City Council.  This option could be utilized independently (i.e., dissolving the subcommittee) or it can be used in combination with Options 1 or 2 above.”

This passed 4-1, with Council Member Albert Vera the one no vote.

Option 1B was then put on the table: “Leave the Ad Hoc 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics Preparation Subcommittee as currently constituted.”

That passed 4-0, with McMorrin abstaining. Therefore, O’Brien remains on the committee.

Action Item 1 (A1) called for, “Consideration of Updating the Culver City Municipal Code Food Truck Regulations, including a Potential Food Truck Permit Program to Regulate the Operations of Food Trucks throughout the City.”

That was passed along for further discussion down the line, as the council seeks to word the regulations so that they benefit all businesses.

Action Item 2 (A2) called for, “Discussion of Annual Earth Day and International Walk to School Day Celebrations; (2) Approval of a Street Closure Along Elenda Street Between Culver Boulevard and Along Farragut Drive Between Elenda Street and Coombs Avenue on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.”

That item passed 4-0, with Vera abstaining.
