MillCross brings people together

MillCross Coffee Bar & Kitchen is, they say on their website, a specialty coffee shop that aims to bring communities together. That’s certainly the vibe when you enter the prime location on Washington. They had the Halloween decorations out, and it felt very much like people were gathering together for a fall event, despite the fact that nothing was really happening and most of the people didn’t know each other. They just felt very together.

“At MillCross, we believe in giving back to our community,” they say. “That’s why we’re proud to donate coffee to the Feed the Streets organization on a monthly basis. We know that a cup of coffee can go a long way in providing comfort and warmth to those in need, and we’re honored to play a small part in that effort. By choosing to purchase our coffee, you’re not only getting a delicious and high-quality product, but you’re also helping us support a worthy cause. Thank you for joining us in making a positive impact in the world.”

It’s good to know that, by visiting MillCross, we’re making a difference elsewhere. As it happens, their food is good too.

This writer isn’t a coffee drinker, so their specialty brews are wasted on me. That said, they have plenty of impressive menu items to choose from. We couldn’t resist the Strawberry Fields Forever Bowl, for two reasons. Not only did it sound delicious based on the menu description, but we’re huge Beatles fans.

You can’t buy me love, but you can buy me one of these fruity smoothie bowls. If it’s too big, eat it with a little help from your friends. The taste please pleases me. OK, I’ll stop now.

That said, there is a song on the Beatles’ debut Please Please Me album called “A Taste of Honey,” and that is utterly appropriate because this bowl does offer exactly that. The frozen, blended strawberries are topped with sliced strawberries, pumpkin seed granola (which is nice and seasonal), and what seems to be a drizzle of honey.

It all blends beautifully into a breakfast treat that seems to be decadent but is actually quite healthy, if not exactly low-cal. The crunch of the granola pairs wonderfully well with the smooth frozen fruit, and the whole dish serves as ideal wake-me-up.

We’d eat it eight days a week!
