Letter to the Editor

Dear editor,

You wrote an interesting editorial (Building brand awareness through community sporting events, March 31) about a possible marathon in Culver City, but it shows how unfamiliar you are with the city.

Culver City hosted the Western Hemisphere Marathon for more than 50 years. At one time it was the second-oldest marathon in the United States, behind only the Boston Marathon. Runners as famous as Billy Mills (Olympic gold medalist) and Bill “Mad Dog” Scobey ran in this marathon. It was the first marathon to allow women to compete with men.

It finally ended as a result of political squabbling and issues of cost. Also, many Culver City residents (including me) hated the idea of being virtually locked in the city during the event. However, it still was something very special for Culver City like the Culver City Speedway and the Hamburger Handout that have disappeared into the past – gone and I guess forgotten.

Barry,

Culver City
