Hooper advances to State Meet; baseball season ends

Culver City sports fans experience mixed emotions last Friday when the baseball team was beaten by Redondo at 5 p.m. and Centaur sprint star Cahlil Hooper qualified for the California State track and field meet in the 200 meters at 8 p.m.

Hooper competed against some of the fastest 200-meter sprinters in the nation and after a slow start out of the blocks he was able to place fifth out of nine runners. His fifth place finish was good enough to advance because the top six in most of the events at the CIF Masters meet qualified for the State meet in Clovis.

After competing against the best 200-meter runners in the CIF Southern Section, which includes over 580 schools, he will now run against the best in the state of California. The state prelims will be held this Friday and if he advances Hooper will compete in the 200-meter final on Saturday.

The Culver City varsity baseball team saw its season come to an end last Friday when they were beaten by No. 1-ranked Redonda Union. The game was supposed to match the two best pitchers in the south bay, Nolan Martinez of Culver City and Sean Reynolds of Redondo. Unfortunately Redondo was able to score nine runs in one inning off of Martinez and another Centaur pitcher.

The Centaurs ended their season with a record of 21-8 and 10-0 in the Ocean league. They fell two games short of their goal of making it to the CIF Division 3 finals. They won their first two playoffs games but could not get pass Redondo. Redondo’s record is 29-2 at press time so the Centaurs can hold their heads up high. They played one of the best teams in Southern California.
