On Saturday, July 22, Boulevard Music will host a performance from super-talented trio Peter McLaughlin, Chris Brashear and Brian Davies. Between the three of them, there’s a wealth of musical expertise and experience on display. McLaughlin and Brashear in particular have been singing and playing together since 1992. McLaughlin told the News about what wer can expect at the weekend…

When did you start playing and performing?

Chris Brashear and I started performing together in 1992.  We met Brian Davies about 5 years later and we began performing together sometime soon after that.

Describe your sound/style?

We write most of our songs and they are mostly place-based songs about the southwestern deserts, rivers, canyons. and the Colorado Plateau.  It would be considered in the genre of singer-songwriter Americana/folk/bluegrass.

What are your career highlights so far?

Chris and I have performed all over the US and Europe.  I am a National flatpicking guitar champion as well as a Telluride guitar contest champion.  Chris recently (last week) represented the Ozarks at the American Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington D.C.  For other accolades wee our websites at petermclaughlin.info and chrisbrashear.info.

What recorded music is available — particularly the most recent?

Chris and I have recorded together on 8 full albums, all released on CD (Canyoneers, So Long Arizona, The Colton House Sessions, Desert Heart-Mountain Soul, Cliffs of Vermilion, Wanderlust, Heart of the Country, and Perfect Strangers). Brian and I have recorded 3 projects together (2 with an Arizona-based bluegrass band called The Sonoran Dogs, one with an acoustic band called the Dreadnutts, and one with a singer-songwriter trio called Canyon Currents).

Have you performed at Boulevard Music before?
Yes, Chris and I performed together with our band Perfect Strangers, and have also performed there as a duet.  Brian and I performed there a couple of times with our bluegrass band, The Sonoran Dogs.

What can the audience expect from the set this time?

Lots of originals and classic bluegrass and old-time country songs.

What else do you have coming up?

Chris and I will be performing in New Mexico in August and September.  I will be on tour in Australia and New Zealand with The Sonoran Dogs in November and December.  2024 is also looking very busy for all of us.
