Culver football travels to Mira Costa today

Last week the Culver City News reported that the football team would be playing their first game of the season against Mira Costa this Friday at 7 p.m. The SCRIMMAGE against Mira Costa is today, Thursday. Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at Mira Costa. We apologize for the mistake.

This year the Centaurs come into the season with a balanced attack. They have play makers on offense and they have a solid defense. “Right now we are doing well,” said head coach Jahmal Wright last Monday after practice. “We are playing a physical brand of football this year and the guys are in shape. We closed out camp last week and for the most part we look good.”

If the Centaurs want to continue to look good the offensive unit must live up to their expectations. “The offense looks great right now,” said Wright. “Our starting quarterback Jonathan (Martin) is healthy and Charles Ross is really stepping up at the receiver position but I am looking for a little better production out of the running backs. We are hoping that Brandon Oum can step in and produce.” Other running backs that are looking for playing time are Nick Bradley and Justin Daniels.

The receiving group looks solid with Ross and returning senior, 6-8 Deven Osborne, senior Justin Cox and senior defensive back and receiver Mekhi Ware bring experience to the position. Other players that will be looking for playing time are Kevin McGuire, Tye’ler Grant, Robert Simon, David Texlte, Andy Garcia-Lopez, Aaron Leach, Steven Ashby and Alex Sanchez.

The quarterback position is in good hands with Martin and Bryce Lewis-Wolf under center. Martin was an all-league player last. He has the ability to run and pass. He accounted for more than 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns on offense last season and he missed four games at the end of the season because of a knee injury. Lewis-Wolf is one of the best backup quarterbacks on the west side

The offensive line will be led by Justin Beer, Sebastian Knowles, Jayden Porter, Nick Swinford, Cameron Williams, Diego Campos, Roman Hayden and Amir Hodge.

The Centaurs are also excited about their kicking game. Carlos Barrillo and Bobby Simon are set to for kickoffs, punts and field goals.
