Culver City’s track and field dynasty appear to be in jeopardy after several other teams in the Ocean league showed they are ready to challenge the Centaurs for championships in all four divisions. The prelims on Monday showed the Ocean league is very competitive this year.

El Segundo, Santa Monica along with Culver City qualified a lot of athletes that will compete in the finals on Thursday (today) at 4 p.m. at Culver City.  Lawndale, Beverly Hills, and Hawthorne also have some outstanding track and field athletes that will make the 2019 Ocean league finals at premier high school track and field meet.

“We did okay in the prelims but not as well as we wanted,” said girls head coach Rayfield M. Beaton on Tuesday morning. “We have to get ready. I don’t think our kids were as ready as I thought they should be. El Segundo and Santa Monica came ready.”

Culver City is hoping to win all four divisions, girls’ varsity, and frosh/soph and boys’ varsity and frosh/soph. The Centaurs are the defending champions in the girls and boys varsity and the girls’ frosh/soph divisions. The girl’s divisions have won five league championships in a row.

“Time-wise some of our runners did not run very well but we have to readjust and work harder these next two days,” said Beaton. “They need to focus on what they need to do and we have to do what we do best.”

In other Culver City sports, the baseball team was 17-5 at press time and they play their final regular season game at home against Beverly Hills today, (Thursday) at 3:15 p.m.  The baseball team is led by the hitting of Mason Le, who is batting .379 and Tanner Duve who is batting .310 and the pitching of Adrian Montenegro (6-1) and Alonzo Reyes (6-2). The Centaurs are currently in third place in the Ocean League.

The girls’ softball team is currently 12-10 overall and 6-1 in league play. They played their last league game last Wednesday and their next game will be in the CIF playoffs. The boy’s volleyball team is currently 4-17 overall and their season is over.

The boy’s lacrosse team is 6-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. Their final regular season game is Friday against St. John Bosco on the road at 6 p.m. The girl’s lacrosse team is 11-4 and 2-1 in league play. Their final regular season game is Friday at Culver City at 6 p.m.
