Culver City Chamber Orchestra prepares for Centennial party

The Culver City Chamber Orchestra will present a celebratory performance on May 27, featuring the music of Bach, Mendelssohn, Bernstein and Brahms.

The orchestra was founded 20 years ago, and soloists Andrés Cárdenes and Arlette Cárdenas will be performing at the event, which will take place at the Turning Point School Auditorium. Their mother, and orchestra treasurer, Arlene Cárdenas said that it’s going to be a special evening.

Andres is an internationally acclaimed violist and conductor, a Grammy-nominated chamber musician, and a distinguished professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Music.

The Los Angeles Times said of him that, “Hearing violist Andrés Cárdenes perform proves all the indulgent pleasure of consuming the biggest dessert on the tray – with neither the guilt nor the calories… Cárdenas stands out as a remarkable mature performer who still exudes unjaded affection for his repertory.”

Meanwhile Arlette Cárdenas is a music director and co-founder at the orchestra and a music teacher. She told the LA Times that, “Culver City started mine, my brother’s and sister’s careers… I want kids to have the same things we had growing up. We wanted to do something for our hometown… We wanted to provide first-rate performances, particularly because (Culver City is) its own city, not a suburb of Los Angeles.”

Arlene Cárdenas has been involved with the orchestra since the very beginning.

“When your children do something, the parents do it too,” she said.

The event takes place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 27 at Turning Point School, 8780 National Boulevard. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors and children aged 13 to 17, and $5 for children under 12.
