City to fund performing arts to the tune of 50 Gs

Nearly $50,000 is on the table for performing artists wishing to further culturally enrich Culver City.

The Culver City Performing Arts Grants Program recently released a notice of funding availability. The program supports nonprofit performing arts organizations in the disciplines of theatre, musical theatre, music, opera or dance.

The deadline for submission is Sept. 7, and eligible performances must be available to the general public in a building or facility wholly or partially located in Culver City or controlled or owned by the city of Culver City or the Culver City Redevelopment Agency. The funding may only be used for direct expenses related to the performance in Culver City and must occur between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2012. Additionally, applicant organizations must qualify as tax-exempt as defined by the IRS at the time of application.

Established in 1994, the Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program offers grants to performing arts organizations in Los Angeles County. Under the purview of the Culver City City Council and the Cultural Affairs Commission, the program is designed to support arts organizations and bring distinguished cultural programming to the city. The grant funding comes from deposits made into the city’s art fund each fiscal year and is supported by a contribution from Sony Pictures Entertainment. The total amount available for the 2012 program will be $46,250.

The application is posted on the Arts & Culture page of the city’s website, culvercity.org. A workshop to assist organizations with the completion of the application will be held Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Dan Patacchia Room at Culver City City Hall, 9770 Culver Blvd.
