Brian Ibarra came within a strike of tossing a no-hitter during a week of outstanding pitching and hitting for the Centaur varsity baseball team.
The Centaur bats are overwhelming the Ocean League, and Culver City High School remained unbeaten at 4-0 by sweeping the Hawthorne Cougars, last week, 13-1 and 5-1. The Centaurs will continue Ocean League play at Inglewood, today, and welcome Morningside, Tuesday.
The Centaurs defeated Hawthorne 13-1 last Tuesday behind the strong pitching of Tyler Mark, good defense, and 16 hits. Jacob Elliott relieved Mark, striking out four batters and allowing one hit in two innings of work. Darian Sylvester, Jay Sterner, Skylar Blocker and Daniel Hennessy each had two hits. George Aceves, Juan Alcala, Tyler Mark, Ibarra, Pablo Saucedo and Adrian Perez all singled.
Ibarra tossed a one hitter, last Thursday, in the 5-1 win over the Cougars.
Ibarra took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. After two quick outs, Ibarra had the third batter behind in the count at 1-2, but he singled to left field. Sterner relieved Ibarra to record the last out.
Mark and Sterner doubled in the fourth inning to score the first run of the game. Ibarra singled in Sterner, and Jon Kocker doubled to score Ibarra, 3-0.
Pinch hitter Timothy Stewart scored two runs on a ground rule double to right field to put the game away.
The Centaurs (12-7 overall) shut out Peninsula, 8-0, in the Redondo Tournament behind the pitching of Jacob Elliott (3 innings), Nathaniel Matthews (2 innings) and Jay Sterner (2 innings).
