Centaur swimmer breaks school mark

Senior Michael Dozal set a Culver City High School record in the 100-meter breaststroke, with a time of 59.14 seconds, placing ninth among the top Southern California swimmers in the recent Division II CIF Swimming Championship finals at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Dozal finished 12th, with a personal best time of 1:56.88 in the 200-meter individual medley.

His record-breaking time in the breaststroke made him the sole Centaur in the CIF Masters Meet in Irvine, where he came in 11th overall with a 59.75 time.

The Centaurs swim team, coached by Nestor Dordoni, qualified in two relays and four individual events in the preliminaries held at Belmont Plaza.

The 200-meter individual medley team of senior Dzenan Kapetanovic, Dozal, sophomore Chris Abdelmalak and junior Cristobal Galvan relay took 18th place.

The 200-meter free relay team placed 24th. The team included sophomore Sterling Salvaterra, Galvan, Abdelmalak and Dozal.

In the individual events, both Dozal and Abdelmalak swam personal best times.

Dozal barely missed the championship heat in the 100-meter breaststroke and placed ninth in the consolation finals. Abdelmalak finished 19th with a 1:00.70. In the 200-meter individual medley, Dozal placed 13th with a 1:57.72 and Abdelmalak finished 25th with a time of 2:00.63.

Dozal broke the school record in the 100-meter breaststroke finals the following day.
