Centaur spring sports move into heart of seasons

Spring break has arrived and the Culver City sports teams break into action once again this weekend and next week when the baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse and boy and girls track and field showcase their skills.

The track and field team hopes to continue their unbeaten dual meet season when they travel to Lawndale today (Thursday) for one of their toughest challenges of the year when they face the Cardinals at 3 p.m.

“Lawndale is always a very tough opponent in every sport so all four of our track and field teams will have to be at our best if we expect to win all four divisions,” said head coach Jahmal Wright  after practice on Tuesday. “We respect their program but at the same time we know Culver City will be ready.” Wright is also the Centaur head football coach.

At the Mustang Relays last week at Mira Costa high school several individuals and relays teams came away with Gold and Silver Medals.  In the varsity boy’s division Desmond Dickson placed first in the 400 meter hurdles, Steven Ashby finished second in second in the high jump and the boys’ varsity 800 meter relay finished second.

On the girls side Yasmin Ashley finished second in the varsity high jump, the varsity distance relay team place first and the varsity 4X200 relay team placed second.

The baseball team is currently 3-4 and they battle Los Angeles Windward Saturday at Culver City with the first pitch set for 12 p.m.  But before the game starts a very special event will take place on the baseball diamond.  From 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. the Centaurs will host the Challenger Baseball Program that highlights kids with special needs.  The baseball players will give instructions to the kids and let them know they can overcome their disabilities.

The girls’ softball is currently 5-5 and they will host Torrance on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

The girls lacrosse team is currently 5-3 and 2-1 in league play and they travel to Los Angeles Hamilton for a 5:30 game today (Thursday).

The boys’ lacrosse team is currently 3-4 and 1-1 in league play and their next game is today (Thursday) against Peninsula at 5 p.m.  On Tuesday, March 28, they have another home game against Harvard Westlake at 4 p.m.
