Blues rockers Big Day Satellite perform at the Cinema Bar this week, so band member Justin Kirby herself told the News about what they have in store for Culver City…

When did you start playing and performing? When did the band form?

Big Day Satellite has been playing in Los Angeles for over ten years. The band grew out of earlier projects formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Justin Kirby and drummer Paul Allen. Bassist Joel Bunn  joined the group in 2012, along with Guitarist Ryan Rehm and keyboardist Mark Thors. In the spring of 2023 they released their self-titled, 14-song album Big Day Satellite, available on Spotify, Soundcloud and many other platforms. They played the main stage at Topanga Days Festival on Memorial Day of the same year, and continue to play local shows at venues such as Venice West and The Mint. The group is currently a  four piece, as Mark Thors has relocated to Baltimore.

Describe your sound…

BDS plays a variety of blues, rock, and funk, both covers and originals.

What are your career highlights so far?

Their first gig at Cinema Bar was in October of 2025, and the band rocked the joint, playing for nearly three hours while firing up the receptive and festive crowd with their fun grooves, catchy originals, and extended jams.

What can we expect from the set this time?

Their gig on May 23rd will bring more of the same, starting at 8:30pm and going until at least 11.
