Culver City Public Theatre is presenting two free shows back-to-back outdoors in Dr. Paul Carlson Memorial Park on Saturdays and Sundays from July 11 – August 2, including the all-ages fantasy tale The Wizard’s Workshop at 12noon and the classic Agatha Christie whodunnit Black Coffee at 2:30 p.m.

Based on the story from the classic ballet “Coppelia,” the world premiere play The Wizard’s Workshop tells the story of Dr. Coppelius, a mysterious dollmaker, who seeks to bring his prize doll to life so he can have a real daughter. Along the way there are mistaken identities, magic spells, lots of action and comic characters. The show is directed by CCPT board member Alaina Haylock, who also co-wrote the script.

Black Coffee was Agatha Christie’s first original play and one of her first works to feature her iconic detective, Hercule Poirot. The twisty tale begins with the poisoning murder of physicist Sir Claude Amory, after his secret atomic bomb formula was stolen from his library. Both thrilling and hilarious, the story involves a classic whodunit with a locked-room mystery, red herrings, and a cast of suspicious houseguests, culminating in Poirot’s dramatic reveal of the killer and the formula’s location.

Culver City Public Theatre’s new production is directed by CCPT president Trace Oakley and features Danielle Fraser as the first female Hercule Poirot, along with returning company members Phoenix Ever, Tamara Koltes, Steven Milner and Andrea Stradling, with Maria Botha, D.W. Cerwonka, Matthew Clair, Hannah Jobman, Ambereen Khan, Luke Matheis and Rachel Speth.

The Wizard’s Workshop runs roughly one hour, which includes one intermission. Black Coffee runs roughly two hours, which includes one intermission.

Both shows are free-of-charge, no reservations necessary. Please bring blankets and low beach chairs for open seating on the grass. Children under the age of 10 should be accompanied by an adult. Picnics are encouraged, with snacks and drinks available for purchase in Dr. Paul Carlson Memorial Park, 10400 Braddock Dr. Culver City, 90232. Onsite restrooms are available.

Performances are made possible in part by the City of Culver City and its Cultural Affairs Commission, with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment and the Culver City Arts Foundation.
