On a picture-perfect Friday (July 3) night in Los Angeles, Angel City FC delivered more than a victory. They put on a celebration of the city’s rapidly growing investment in women’s sports.
The match against Orlando Pride coincided with LA Sports Night, bringing together athletes, fans, and members of the local sports community for an evening that showcased just how much momentum women’s athletics continue to build across Southern California.
That momentum was on full display before kickoff as USC’s women head basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb joined USC women’s basketball freshmen Saniyah Hall and Sara Okeke to lead Angel City’s signature three-clap, drawing a loud ovation from the crowd and symbolizing the connection between two of Los Angeles’ premier women’s sports programs.
Once the match began, Angel City wasted little time electrifying the home supporters. Maiara Niehues opened the scoring, sending the stadium into a frenzy as fans erupted in celebration. The energy only intensified when Sveindís Jónsdóttir added a second goal, giving Angel City control of the match and rewarding an enthusiastic home crowd.
While the attack grabbed the headlines, Angel City’s defensive effort proved equally important. The backline remained organized throughout the evening, limiting Orlando’s opportunities and preserving a commanding performance from start to finish.
The celebration didn’t end with the final whistle. As fireworks illuminated the Los Angeles sky, thousands of fans stayed in their seats to cap off a memorable night. The postgame display reflected the excitement surrounding Angel City FC and served as another reminder that women’s sports are no longer emerging. They are thriving.
From the atmosphere inside the stadium to the growing support across the city, Friday night’s event illustrated why Los Angeles has become one of the epicenters of women’s sports. Angel City FC didn’t simply earn three points. They delivered an experience that celebrated community, culture, and the continued rise of the women’s soccer game.
