42nd Street, Live from the Puppet Asylum, and Lennon & Nilsson: Songs from the Lost Weekend

Kentwood Players presents the hit Broadway musical 42nd Street with Music by Harry Warren, Lyrics by Al Dubin, and Book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble, opening Friday, November 14 through December 13, directed and choreographed by Doug Vasquez, with vocal direction by Abby Carlson. It is produced by Margaret Harrington, Daniel Kruger, and Jeremy Palmer. 42nd Street by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc. Performances take place at the Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Ave., Los Angeles 90045 on Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00pm, and Saturdays & Sundays at 2:00pm. In addition, there will be two Thursday performances at 8:00 pm on December 4 and 11. There are no performances over Thanksgiving weekend, November 27-30.

Winner of two 1980 Tony Awards, 42nd Street tells the tale of Julian Marsh’s journey putting on a Broadway musical at the height of the Great Depression. Peggy Sawyer, a motivated young performer wearing her heart on her sleeve, arrives on Broadway with the hope of making it as a performer. What ensues is a song and dance extravaganza, a feast for the senses and a tap dancer’s dream – a joyful, buoyant celebration of musical theater. Come and meet those dancing feet as you time travel back to 1930.

A special one-night puppetry slam presented by Nite at the Puppet Asylum and Strings & Things Puppet Theatre will be presented at the Blue Door Theater in Culver City on Saturday, November 8 at 8pm. LATE NITE AT THE PUPPET ASYLUM is hosted by Joyce Hutter with emcee Cat’s Pajamas, a 90-minute show that combines the phenomenon of adult puppetry featuring local artists, comedians, magicians, and musicians, as well as short-form puppetry videos from around the country via open submissions. So, before the madness of the holiday season hits, it’s time to laugh during an extraordinary evening of puppetry mayhem fueled by talented puppet artists and performers whose works range from the hilarious and/or evocative to totally experimental.  

This event is generously supported by The Puppet Slam Network, run by Heather Henson (daughter of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson) who, in her own right, is a visionary puppet artist, director, and producer who creates transformative and educational experiences which honor Mother Earth and inspire people to nurture the planet. The Network’s mission is to create a treasure trove of puppeteers around the world to incite puppetry whenever and wherever possible. 

Host Joyce Hutter, a puppet designer, storyteller, and the artistic director of Strings & Things Puppet Theatre, uses a medley of styles and mediums to create elegant shadow and hand puppets, life-size mechanical puppets, and rod and body puppets to entertain both children and adult audiences. Her mission is to bring puppet theatre performances to life with insightful messages, a social conscience, and a sense of humor to enlighten, educate and challenge viewers. Joyce is also a scenic designer at theaters in the greater Los Angeles area, including ArtsUP! LA and The Blue Door in Culver City.

LATE NITE AT THE PUPPET ASYLUM takes place on Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m. at the Blue Door Theater, 9617 Venice Blvd. in Culver City 90232 (on the North side of Venice Blvd. between Cardiff and Watseka Ave.). Come join a night of quirky fun, and be ready to laugh, gasp, and be amazed as talented puppeteers put on a show like no other, from hilarious skits to mind-bending illusions! Live from Laurel Canyon presents Lennon & Nilsson: Songs from the Lost Weekend, a celebration of two iconic and prolific songwriters: John Lennon and Harry Nilsson. In 1973, a few years after the Beatles broke up, Lennon found himself in Los Angeles and spent the next 18 months making music (and mischief) with his pal, American singer/songwriter, Harry Nilsson; a period Lennon referred to as “the Lost Weekend.” This show explores their individual catalogs, the impact they had on each other’s work, their collaborative efforts during this period, and shares the stories that inspired these unique songwriters.
