SENIOR OF THE MONTH FRANK PITTS

The Culver City Senior Citizens Association Board of Directors is pleased to honor

Frank Pitts

Senior of the Month

Frank has been the Ceramics instructor at the Senior Center for almost 10 years. Frank enjoys helping people be successful at something they are trying to learn and volunteering his time and talent in the Ceramics Class rewards him with many personal benefits.

Frank says that his expertise at ceramics is a “hobby gone wild!” He loves teaching others the fun and creativity of ceramics and makes his own vases, bowls, cups, etc. on the wheel at his home.

Frank is a native Angeleno, growing up on East 18th Street and attending Jefferson High School, Santa Monica College and Cal State Los Angeles. Frank’s father was a blacksmith and very skilled in technical matters, and he passed on these technical skills to Frank. Frank is a mas- ter technician in auto repair and had a very successful career as a machinist with Los Angeles County.

Frank is an Army Veteran of the Korean War and served in the artillery in the combat zone. After the war, Frank received his BA in Art and later a Masters in Educa- tion. He spent the next few years as a teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. He found that using his technical skills was a better fit for work but has al- ways maintained his interest and talent in the arts.

Frank wants to share this honor of being Senior of the Month with his volunteer assistant of five years, Sharen Sawa. She is the “glue that holds the pieces together” and does most of the kiln firing for the class. Her behind the scenes assistance in invaluable to Frank and to the students. Many thanks to Frank and Sharen.
