UCLA shooter had ties to Culver City

Los Angeles Police Dept. detectives located a 2003 gray Nissan Sentra in Culver City last week belonging to UCLA shooter Mainak Sarkar.

Police searched the vehicle, which was found west of Sawtelle Boulevard and Washington Place, not far from the popular Tito’s Tacos restaurant, for weapons and explosives.

No explosives were found, said LAPD Chief of Detectives Matt Blake at a June 3 press conference, but police did recover a handgun and several gasoline containers.

Sarkar killed his former UCLA professor William Klug on June 1, prompting a massive police response and causing the university to be shut down for three hours. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said police suspect the motive for killing Klug could be a “dispute over intellectual property.”

Sarkar, who graduated from UCLA in 2013, committed suicide after killing Klug, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

A Culver City bus transfer was found in the shooter’s pocket after police found him and Klug, which led detectives to search certain locations in Culver City. Police authorities said at some point Sarkar lived in the Culver City area while he was attending UCLA.

He is also a suspect in the murder of his estranged wife, Ashley Hasti of Brooklyn Park Minn., who was found dead in her home on June 2.
