Westside All Star Baseball Classic will take place Saturday at WLAC

This Saturday high school baseball will discover it’s past, develop the present and look to the future when they play in the Westside All-Star Baseball Classic at West Los Angeles College at 3 p.m.

“The feedback from the community has been very positive,” said classic director Michael Oxley.  “The idea is to get one or two players from a lot of schools from all over the area north of the Los Angeles International Airport.”

The cost of admission is $3 and the game is being sponsored by Victory Custom Athletics. Local players who normally do not get publicity and exposure that the South Bay and Valley players get want to play in this classic.

 “The Division I and II schools rarely recruit from this area,” said Oxley.  “The more opportunity they have to be seen the more opportunity they have to play at the next level.”

Artie Harris, the first baseball coach at West Los Angeles College will throw out the first ball.  Batting practice will start at 1 p.m. and the pre-game activities will start at 2 p.m.

Culver City’s football team of the future was in action last Saturday at UCLA when they played in a passing tournament.  The Centaur quarterbacks, receivers and running backs played five games in the tournaments.

“We did a very good job in the tournament,” said assistant coach Greg Goodyear. “We won three games and loss two but several players did a great job.” They beat North Torrance, Roosevelt and Whittier Cristian and loss to Buena Park and Narbonne.

The players that stood out l for the Centaurs were quarterbacks Quantorious Truitt and Xavier Ryan, receivers Reynard Saxon, Donovan Davis and Jason Grossman. “Saxon was outstanding in all five games,” said Goodyear.

In college sports UCLA will compete in the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene Oregon starting today through Saturday.  Some of the greatest track and field athletes in the world will battle for college track and field supremacy.  UCLA qualified 11 athletes for the championships.
