Victory for Hugo

The critically acclaimed Les Miserables has shattered box office records and is headed to Portland, Ore. as part of its successful new tour.

During its last four weeks of production (July 4 – 31), the Center Theatre Group production, directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell and performed at the Ahmanson Theatre, broke box office records with final-week ticket sales totaling $1,530,099, a new record for the theatre.

The show also surpassed Jersey Boys for the highest single-performance gross, with a whopping $207,607 for the July 31 matinee. The re-imagined show was called “unquestionably spectacular” by the New York Times and received an “astonishingly powerful” from the London Times.

“I find it truly amazing that Les Miserables continually has the power to surprise, so I’m thrilled that my new production has broken major box office records at L.A.’s Ahmanson Theatre and that it is selling out in theatres all over America on its National Tour,” said Producer Cameron Mackintosh, who produced Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera.

Center Theatre Group’s Producing Director Doug Baker added, “We anticipated strong ticket sales for ‘Les Miz’ and were ecstatic when sales exceeded expectations.”

“Even Carmageddon couldn’t put a damper on our record-breaking box office results,” Baker noted.

Mackintosh’s new production has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg from the original French text, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and additional material by James Fenton. The show is designed by Matt Kinley, inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, with costumes by Andreane Neofitou and Christine Rowland, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Mick Potter.
