Supervisors authorize demolition contractor for planned nature center

Ledcor Construction, Inc. has been chosen as the contractor for the Stoneview Nature Center by the county Board of Supervisors.

The supervisors awarded the Irvine-based construction company a $7.4 million contact on Oct. 28 that would include building a multipurpose room wall, a walking path and a covering for the center’s parking lot, among other things.

Demolition work at the project location, at 5950 Stoneview Drive that will be handled by Ledcor will include the removal of fences and gates, concrete and asphalt paving and existing buildings.

The proposed center in Baldwin Hills will include a 4,000 square foot community building with a multi-purpose room, a staff office, interior and exterior restrooms, an open terrace and a yoga deck. Other features of the proposed nature center include surface parking, a demonstration/ and community garden, an observation area and botanical and nature gardens.

Northstar Demolition and Remediation, LP, a Brea-based company, has been hired as a contractor to conduct investigative work on the removal of an abandoned oil well near the project site. The Inglewood Oilfield in Baldwin Hills is in close proximity to the proposed nature center.

The board approved plans to create the $10 million nature center last August.
