DID YOU KNOW—Many people refer to Culver City as feeling like Mayberry, North Carolina, the fictional town that was the setting for the Andy Griffith Show. The irony is the entire set for the fictional town of Mayberry was located right across Higuera Street from Smashbox Studios here in Culver City.
The area was known then as the Forty Acres. The interiors for the show were all shot nearby at Desilu Studios, now The Culver Studios. The series was a major hit, never placing lower than seventh in the Nielsen ratings and ending its final season at number one.
It has been ranked by TV Guide as the 9th-best show in television history. Next time you overhear someone saying that Culver City reminds them of Mayberry you can let them know just how right on they are.
