Mike Scully wakes up the Cinema Bar with his Weary Travelers

(Jaime Levy )

Singer/songwriter Mike Scully performs with his band the Weary Travelers on Sunday, Aug. 21, 9 p.m., at the Cinema Bar. A winner of Ventura County’s Male Artist of the Year, and the man responsible for the Only the Beginning EP, Scully is playing Culver City’s celebrated venue for the first time and hopes it isn’t the last. He spoke to the News about what we can expect…

When did you start writing and performing, and when did it get serious?

Since the moment I picked up a guitar at 12 I had been writing my own music and lyrics. It was always a hobby and an outlet. I got serious about the craft after releasing my first single in 2016. The song was titled “Take Me When You Go” and I had written it for a friend whose wife had recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. At this time I was performing as a solo acoustic act. It wasn’t until just before COVID that the Weary Travelers joined me. Since then the music has shifted into something really special that we all love and love to share with crowds.

Describe your sound…

One of the greatest things about being a singer/songwriter is that there is no limitation to the “Sound”. Some days I’m feeling excited and happy and I write rock & roll tunes. Other days I’m depressed and write emo ballads. Still other days I’m heartbroken and write some blues songs. So it’s a very eclectic sound. However, I grew up listening to Garth Brooks and I have been told that I sing a lot like him. So no matter the genre, the crowd always thinks we are a country band.

What are your career highlights so far?

Definitely releasing my EP Only The Beginning. In my humble opinion it was a great success and it was a beautiful thing to have so many strangers from around the world to reach out and tell me how much the songs meant to them. That’s really what music is all about. Other career highlights would be opening for Don LcLean and The Temptations, winning Male Artist of the Year in Ventura County (my hometown), and recording our upcoming record (Somewhere Through The Trees) in Nashville with my band The Weary Travelers.

Do you have any recorded music available?

Yes, my single and EP are both available everywhere music is streamed. You can find it by simply searching my name “Mike Scully.”

Have you performed at Cinema Bar before?

I have not, however I am very much looking forward to it. Seems like my kinda place.

What can we expect from the set?

You can expect to see four dudes that love to play music, laugh, joke around and just have a good time.

What else do you have coming up?

We will be performing all around the SoCal area in the next couple months. Then we will be doing a short tour through Tennessee in Oct and then Arizona in November. But most exciting is the record that we are determined to finish by early next year and release to the world.
