Love Birria like there’s no tomorrow

Abuelita’s Birria has eight locations in the Los Angeles area, and the one here in Culver City is tagged Love Birria which is a perfectly appropriate name for a kitchen that produces Mexican food as lovable as this.

“Love Birria brings the bold flavors of Mexico to Culver City, CA with mouthwatering, authentic dishes made from time-honored recipes,” they say online. “From slow-cooked birria to crispy tacos and savory consommé, each bite offers a taste of tradition. It’s Mexican comfort food done right, served fresh every day.”

They add, “Enjoy our authentic Birria is made with only the freshest and finest ingredients. Our skilled chefs carefully combine all the elements to create a flavorful dish that truly stands out.”

They also have a startlingly impressive social media presence. It’s not just the food but the lifestyle; Abuelita’s/Love Birria make it feel like they’re hosting a giant party across Southern California, and their food is the source of the joy.

The menu is impressive, and quite diverse. There are items on here that one wouldn’t necessarily find at a traditional Mexican restaurant, such as the Birria Pitta Tacos. To roll the classic taco fillings, such as asada, chicken or pastor, in pita bread is a stroke of genius, and a great way to allow cultures to blend. Fusion dining at its best.

Their regular tacos, burritos, tortas, enchiladas, and quesadillas also look incredible, as do the burgers, soups and desserts. All of that said, we went for a classic Bean and Cheese Burrito: “A harmonious blend of hearty beans, fluffy rice, wrapped in a warm tortilla.” (We took it vegan and skipped the cheese).

From skin to within, this was a great burrito. The rice was seasoned to perfection; mildly spiced with a touch of tang. The taste of grain sticks around though, like a friend that stays around at a house party to help with the dishes. You want the help, and the company.

The lettuce is crisp and manages to retain its body, even when faced with the other warm ingredients. There are also onions and avocado on there. The onions are tart and crunchy, adding the appropriate bite to the burrito, while the avocado is plump, soft and firm.

The beans bring the whole thing together, like tiny little protein balls that double as control freaks. Wrapped in a fresh tortilla, we couldn’t have enjoyed it more. We did indeed love this birria.
