Looking Back: Costumes

The gifts of time and expertise turn volunteer hours into gold for non-profit organizations like the Culver City Historical Society. It never ceases to amaze me how so many wonderful people take time from their very busy schedules to benefit our community.

The Culver City Historical Society Archives and Resource Center is a gem located at the back of the newly marked Veterans Memorial Building (4117 Overland Avenue, Culver City). The society’s multi-faceted approach continually builds on its thirty- plus years of preserving local history. In addition to their quarterly programs, special tours, and assisted research, the society regularly opens its doors to celebrate the story of Culver City and environs, from our Native Americans to the Early Settlers, to our city founder Harry Culver and the city’s development and redevelopment.

During Black History month, many have noted an ongoing display that includes many items from our Julian Dixon collection. There are pieces from late Congressman Dixon’s office back to his time as our assembly member.

As the Heart of Screenland, we celebrate our entertainment history heartily. The Society, caretaker of 65 MGM costumes, offers regular exhibits of those in addition to our own collection of movie-related historical items.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Archives are displaying an 1880s-style dress designed by Helen Rose for Julie London as Joan Blake for “Saddle the Wind,” a 1958 M-G-M film.

Although the Veterans Memorial Building is currently undergoing refurbishing, the society’s archives along with the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services offices remain open. Entry is from the parking lot behind the building. Check the society website, www.culvercityhistoricalsociety.org for the latest news, or call 310 253-6941. Please stop by- the public is invited at no charge. We have recently enjoyed visits from KNX radio’s Chris Sedens and Kim Upton and crew from the MTA/EXPO line. Enjoy your rich Culver City history!
