If your fitness level has reached a plateau, consider changing up regular workouts with an interval training studio class once or twice a week. A good interval training class will break up old routines and often provide visible results.
Janet Crown, owner of Burn 60 in Los Angeles, established the workout studio in 2005 after disappointing experiences at larger gyms. What she and her business partner Drew Gerstein created is a clean, client-focused studio that provides an intense bout of interval training that completes a workout in one hour. The workouts, which vary from class to class, feature five-, 10- and 15-minute intervals of cardio and resistance training, which can be customized depending on the level of difficulty – beginner, intermediate and advanced sessions are available.
“We’ve gone all over Los Angeles and taken every class to recruit the best trainers,” Crown said. “They don’t just show up for class. They take each others’ classes, share ideas and try to get to know all the clients by name to make sure they have the best experience.”
This creativity is instrumental in any good interval training studio. If one’s gym routines consist only of running, squats and sit-ups, an interval training class may introduce those interested in resistance bands, free weights and stability balls that will hit muscles not commonly engaged. The results are a more toned physique and faster weight loss.
Case in point: a workout at Burn 60 features short bursts of intense cardio on a treadmill, where exercisers can control their own speed and elevation. The instructor will call out suggestions for the various fitness levels: walker, jogger, runner or advanced. The floor work can incorporate several elements from free weights to resistance bands and mat work. No workout is exactly the same, so confused muscles are consistently working and toning. As any good studio will ensure, visitors are more than welcome to take it all at their own pace and the instructors are there to tailor the workout to each individual’s fitness goals.
