The miracle of Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken is that they’ve managed to take something fundamentally engraved in our national consciousness and surprised us with it. Progressed beyond the conventional and broken new ground. We’re talking about chicken (or fish), covered in breading and then deep fried. And yet, there’s a deep history behind the skills.
“The art of Kettle-Cooking dates back to the colonial days, when our ancestors prepared perfectly seasoned comfort meals in piping hot fireplaces,” they say on their website. “Honey’s Kettle was built on those special traditions when families and friends gathered around delicious food and lots of laughter. Our founder Vincent Williams, or ‘Chef Vinny’ as they call him – has cooked more fried chicken than anyone on the planet. With nearly 50 years’ experience perfecting the crispy, golden goodness of Honey’s Kettle Fresh Fried Chicken, he is redefining the lost art of Kettle-Cooking.”
Chef Vinny might be some sort of a fried chicken genius. The man is a magician, taking a simple flour mixture and turning it into aromatic, herbed and spiced perfection.
“It all started in the year 2000 on Alondra Boulevard in Compton, California,” the bio reads. “Chef Vinny brought his New, Old-Fashioned concept of fresh-fried chicken and warm, buttery biscuits to life in what later became known as the test kitchen. Through the pillars of family traditions and love, he drove his old Volvo to the corner building every day and developed recipes for fresh-squeezed Ice Shaker Lemonade and Cole Slaw to add to the chicken customers craved. After five, dedicated years, his dream led him to an empty building on Culver Boulevard, which would eventually be the premiere destination for fried chicken lovers everywhere. From there, Honey’s Kettle has continued to expand across multiple cities in the greater Los Angeles area, and it doesn’t stop”
The last time we ate at Honey’s, we had the catfish. This time, we’ve gone for the classic three-piece meal which comes with a choice of chicken (drumstick, breast, thigh, wing – we had a mix), kettle fries, a buttery biscuit and tangy pickles.
As well as the aforementioned perfect chicken, the fries are hot, fresh and crispy. The biscuit is as buttery as advertised, and the pickles certainly are sweet and tangy.
“As a family-owned business, we pride ourselves on preparing mouth-watering meals that create meaningful moments with the people you love,” they say. We can vouch for that.
