Hike for Foster Youth Saturday at Hahn Rec. Area

A 2.3-mile hike sponsored by Kidsave will take place at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area on Saturday, Nov. 3. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the hike will last about an hour. The park is at 4100 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles.

Kidsave of Culver City is inviting the community with the hopes of raising awareness and to garner interest and involvement in the lives of foster youth who are in need of a caring adult in their lives.

The hike is an opportunity for participants to engage in conversation and get to know children aged 9 to 17, who currently do not have a permanent home. One of the goals is to build permanent connections for older foster youth and find adoptive families for the foster youth said the Kidsave staff.

“Without a permanent family, youth age out of foster care long before they are prepared to live on their own without any family support,” a Kidsave official said.

Rated four stars from Charity Navigator, Kidsave “works with governments and volunteers to start programs that will connect children with adoptive families and committed mentors.”

“With family support, most of these children can lead happy, productive lives. They have a tremendous ability to be contributing members of society”.

The hike will begin at the lower park across from the park’s community center and is known as the Sun Valley area.

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area boasts of being one of the largest inner-city parks according to Los Angeles County of Parks and Recreation and has a forest of 140 trees representing the number of countries which participated in the 1932 Summer Olympics. It was also home to the 1984 Summer Olympics.

The scenic landscape contains a fishing lake, and a Japanese garden with a stream and mini waterfall, tennis and basketball courts, and a sand volleyball court.

Lunch will be provided following the hike. There is no charge to participate, however, donations of any amount will be accepted. The cost of parking is $6.
