Culver City’s Girl Scout Troop 2965 was awarded a silver award for its part in spreading awareness about animal abuse and animal rights. Sara Murphy, Nastasia MacDonald, Miranda Myers, Briana Grogan, Jenna Pierre, Courtney Bergstrom and Kelsi Parsons comprise the troop.

The girls, ages 13 to 15, sought out experts to educate themselves on the issues – including the fur industry, circuses and puppy mills. They consulted Bunny Bunch, Marine Mammal Care Center, Last Chance for Animals, Center Sinai Animal Hospital, and International Bird Rescue Research Center.

They then made YouTube videos about factory-farmed animals, domestic animal abuse, rabbit adoption and the dangers confronting marine animals. They penned educational coloring books for the Girl Scouts and schools with information about animals rights. They presented their work at the United Nations Celebration Day in Pasadena, wrote letters to government leaders, including President Obama and Governor Jerry Brown. PETA decided to write about the girls on its blog.

The award required 40 hours of work, however, the troop spent two years working on their project.
