Culver City High School proved once again that it’s not only a very good academic school, but it also produces top quality sports programs. Five winter teams made it to the big dance this week. For many years the name Culver City High School has been in the mix when it comes to CIF playoffs.

Girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer and girls’ water polo competed this week for the right to call themselves CIF champions. To make the CIF playoffs you must be very competitive in your sport.

The girls water polo team won their first two CIF playoff matches before they lost to Hemet 8-3 last Tuesday on the road. Culver City finished the season with a record of 15-9.

Boys’ soccer played a home CIF playoff game on Wednesday, February 11, against Segerstrom at 5 p.m. Going into the game, the Centaurs were 10-4-1 and Segerstrom was 8-6-5.

Girls’ soccer team had a CIF playoff home game on Thursday, February 12, at 3 p.m. against 17-4-1 Granite Hills. The Lady Centaurs went into that game with a record of 8-5-1 and they were 7-0 (1st place) in the Ocean league.

The boys’ basketball team finished the regular season 11-11 and they played their CIF playoff game against 17-11 Saugus on the road last Wednesday in Division 4A.

The girls’ basketball team played their CIF playoff game on Thursday, February 12. As of Tuesday night, the location had not been announced because the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams had to play all of their games on the road because the campus gym was damaged last November during the heavy rains. The Centaurs finished the regular season 12-12 and they play Santa Paula in Division 5A CIF playoffs.

“We should be alright,” said Julian Anderson the girls head basketball coach when he talked to the paper this week. “We just need to keep the girls in good spirits. That’s been our battle cry all year.”

The boys’ basketball team is facing a tough challenge this week against Saugus. “To be honest I was confident that we would make the playoffs because we finished fifth in a tough league. I just hope we can take care of the ball and limit the turnovers. I hope we can put together a string of good basketball in the playoffs, but we have to take it one game at a time.”
