Fat Sals can carry a tuna

Fat Sal’s describes itself online as, “the spot for your favorite guilty pleasure sandwiches or sides. We also have salads.  But we don’t judge.” That’s a perfect description, because everything about Fat Sal’s, from the name to the large amount of merchandise available for purchase, screams decadence.

While, yes, Fat Sal does sell salads, this really isn’t the chow-joint that you want to venture to if calorie counting is your thing right now. But the “guilty pleasure” of a Fat Sal’s sandwich is worth taking a night off. Take the pressure off for a little bit – release a bit of steam.

OR, try their food challenges. The Big Fat Fatty sandwich is: cheesesteak, cheeseburgers, pastrami, chicken fingers, crisp bacon, mozzarella sticks, fried eggs, fries, onion rings, chili, marinara, and Fat Sauce, all on a 30-inch garlic hero. Eat that beast inside 40 minutes, and it’s free. Otherwise, it’ll set you back $99.99.

There’s also the Big Fat Fat Shake: 30 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 30 scoops of chocolate ice cream, cake, candy, cookies, pretzels, syrup, and whipped cream. You only get 10 minutes to consume that sugar volcano. Again, it’s free if you succeed but $99.99 if you don’t.

Sadly, the challenges are available in many of the Fat Sal’s locations but not Culver City. Mind you, their regular sandwiches are challenging enough. The Fat Texas, for example, is: BBQ pastrami brisket, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, crisp bacon, grilled onions, melted cheddar and mozzarella, fries, mayo, honey BBQ, all on a garlic hero.

Of course, you don’t have to binge yourself into a coma at Fat Sal’s. You can always split the difference, as this writer did. Our choice was the Albacore Tuna Wrap: “Sal’s homemade albacore tuna salad, avocado, lettuce, tomato, vinaigrette, fresh ground pepper, drizzled extra virgin olive oil.”

Everything, from the actual wrapping to the salad, is fresh and bursting with flavor. The avocado is a great touch, really adding some texture to the filling. The lettuce and tomato are crisp and vibrant, and it’s all seasoned nicely.

But Sal’s special tuna salad is awesome. Creamy, fresh and delicious, the tuna tastes like it was caught on the day that it was eaten. Put it all together, and it makes for a superb wrap.

Fat Sal’s Deli has locations all over the L.A. area, and we heartily recommend that you try one as soon as possible.
