Dire situation overtakes dogs in need

There are some very special people in the world. I’ve been lucky to meet quite a few. Diana Daunert is one of the true gems of the world.

Save-A-Life, a nonprofit 501c3, has been about making animal’s dreams come true—often when even a last glimmer of hope has faded—for a decade.

In 1995, Daunert retired from her Los Angeles teaching job, bought a ranch in the Mojave and dedicated herself full-time to her rescue mission.

Daunert provides a place to live and finds caring, loving homes for these animals.

S-A-L is a no kill rescue and will provide for the animals for their lifetime. These lucky animals romp and play at a wonderful sanctuary north of Los Angeles until they are adopted—no matter how long it takes.

Danunert started with a mission to save cats. But, over the years, people would bring her dogs as well. And she couldn’t turn a blind eye.

But there is a small problem—the paperwork for a dog rescue is slightly different from that for cats. For 10 years this was not a problem.

Now, the county is ordering her to get rid of the dogs. They gave her six months to place dozens of canines.

Her time ran out on Sept. 16.

Now these beautiful animals are at risk of going to the county shelter, where they will be euthanized if homes can’t be found.

I spent the weekend photographing these dogs in the hope that I could help save them. To view all the animals, you can visit www.Facebook.com/LoriFusaro. Or contact Diane directly at 661-824-8802 or email salvol@peoplepc.com
