Alt-country outfit Dark Sky Reserve performs at the Cinema Bar on Friday, so singer and songwriter Devlin Borra told the News about what they have in store for Culver City…
When did you start playing and performing? When did the band form?
We made a record during quarantine but never played any shows. Things kinda went dormant for a while. We just started performing as a full band a few months ago and it’s been a blast.
Describe your sound…
Alt-country. I think the sound reflects my rural roots in the northwest to now living in L.A., and all I’ve seen in between. So we’ll just call that alt-country. Haha.
What are your career highlights so far?
Playing the Cinema Bar will always be a highlight. As beloved as it is, I still think it’s underrated. There’s been some big names on that stage and many more great players that aren’t big names every week.
What recorded music is available?
We put out an EP called The Loon and The Fisherman a couple months ago. I’m quite proud of it, and we had a lot of fun putting it together.
What can we expect from this Cinema Bar set”
We do a mix of original songs and covers. I’ve got a baritone voice and a deep reverence for Johnny Cash so we always throw some of his stuff in. It’s fun to do and usually gets the crowd moving.
What else do you have coming up?
In August we’re headed up to Mammoth Lakes to play an event for our wildland firefighters. I’m super excited for that. Great cause, great scenery, and getting to spend time with the guys in my band. Yeah… I can’t wait for that one.
