Culver City to harvest rainwater

The City of Culver City and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation (SMBRF) are working together on a city-wide rainwater harvesting program. The foundation will provide the funding and technical expertise for the Culver City Rainwater Harvesting Program, offering all Culver City residents and commercial properties the opportunity to receive a professionally-installed rain barrel for a fraction of the retail price.

“This Program will serve as a benchmark for green cities by allowing residents to help clean up Santa Monica Bay and conserve precious water,” said Culver City Mayor Micheál O’Leary, an early supporter of the Rainwater Harvesting Program.

Rainwater harvesting involves capturing rainwater from a roof (or other surface) and putting it to use for activities such as watering lawns and gardens. The goal of Culver City and SMBRF is to install 500 rain barrels during the first year.

The first 500 Culver City residents to sign up can take advantage of the opportunity for a professionally-installed rain barrel for a suggested donation of $40 to cover material costs for the barrel.
