The Culver City High School boys 4×400-meter relay squad ran its fastest time of the season, finishing fourth – just short of the result needed to advance in the CIF-Southern Section Division II Championships at Cerritos College.

The Centaur track and field team’s only other qualifying team in the championships – the 4×100 meter relay – was disqualified due to passing out of zone. The Centaurs were unofficially in seventh, timing in at 42.75.

The 4×400 meter relay squad of Miles Washington, Reginald House, Alex Jackson and Anthony Luckett finished fourth, at three minutes and 21.24 seconds.

The Centaurs fell short of advancing to Friday’s CIF-Southern Section Masters Championships, as the cutoff point was 3:19.59 by Loyola High, the third-place team in the race and the Division II team champion.

Indio won the race, clocking 3:17.05, followed by runner-up Santa Ana Mater Dei in 3:17.34.

“I am very pleased with how our team ran,” Culver City head coach Jamal Wright said.

As Wright and the team members checked the results, they felt they had a chance to advance to the Masters, but the time was only the 12th best, three positions off the cutoff of the top nine and one shy of two alternates.

Luckett, Jackson, Washington and House were also teamed in the 4×100 meter relay.

Senior Babandeep Singh earlier in the season ran a personal best of 10:21.14 in the 3200 meters of the South Bay Championships, held at West Torrance High School to eclipse assistance coach Nick Alvarez’s career best of 10:25.43, set in the 2009 Ocean League finals. Senior Charles Back established a season-best in the open 1600 meters, running his first sub five-minute time of the season, just two seconds off his personal best.
