The Culver City High School football team is hoping to move in a different direction on Friday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Downey to face the Warren High School Bears. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
The Centaurs are 1-2 having lost their last two games against Redondo two weeks ago and Bishop Amat last week. This week Culver City turns its attention to 4-0 Warren. “Warren is a well-coached team,” said Culver City head football coach Jahmal Wright in a telephone interview this week. “They have a lot of talent on the edges. They are athletic and they have speed. They are averaging a lot of points per game, so this game is going to be a really tough battle for us, but we are really excited for the challenge.”
The Centaurs have a two-game winning streak against the Bears so Wright is hoping his team can make it a three-game winning streak. The past few years Culver City has been a good road team, but each year is different.
“We are approaching this game as a must win game because it will be tough if we don’t come out with a victory because our next game is at home against another good team, Mira Costa,” said Wright. “We need to get back to our winning ways and build some momentum going into the game next week and we need to get ready for league play in a few weeks.”
Last week Bishop Amat beat the Centaurs 65-13, but Culver City was missing several key players on offense. “We played a very good high school football team last week,” said Wright. “I believe Bishop Amat is one to the best teams in the state of California right now. They are a well-coached team, and we made some mistakes and they took advantage of our mistakes. When you play a team of that caliber, they normally take advantage of your mistakes.”
Once again, the Centaurs will be led by senior quarterback Nicholas Hoang. He has completed 75 out of 120 passes for 1104 yards and 10 touchdowns in three games. He is also the leading rusher on the team with 99 yards on 30 carries. Receiver Jo’el La foe has caught 18 passes for 348 years and four touchdowns.”
Warren is also led by their quarterback, 6’5” 220-pound Jordan Malikin. He has thrown for 1,073 yards and 17 touchdowns.
If the Centaurs expect to win the game, they will have to play a near perfect game on offense and defense, stop the Bears potent passing attack and cut down on their mistakes.
