CCSCA: Programs galore for members

As a resident of Culver City have you ever wondered about the attractive building on the northwest corner of Culver Boulevard and Overland Avenue? This is the Culver City Senior Center, home of the Culver City Senior Citizens Association (CCSCA). At least 40% of the residents of Culver City are over 50 and eligible to join the CCSCA. You don’t have to be alone in your twilight years. Step inside for a visit and you will find the halls teeming with seniors enjoying the company of other seniors. From 8 to 10:30 a.m., each day you can drop into the Nutrition Room for ‘Snack ‘N Chat.’  Purchase a cup of coffee (50 cents) and toast or pastry (50 cents) browse the library and take a book (no checkout needed) or talk to friends. Coffee is free to members on Tuesdays.

During 2016, more than 4,200 seniors (age 50-plus) joined the Association entitling them to participate in the programs offered by the CCSCA. Walk through the building and you will find a variety of programs, fitness classes including Zumba, tai chi, yoga, language and art classes, free movies to members on Sundays and Tuesdays, a Fitness Room (additional $125 a year, or $75 for 6 months), Billiards room, mahjong, bridge, short story reading, poetry writing, groups for veterans, harmonica players and ukulele players and much more.

The Association offers computer, tablet and i-phone classes for $35 for 6 weekly lessons. There is a trip office for Association sponsored trips to theatrical events, casinos etc. at moderate fees. You can find groups for the bereaved as well as opportunities for volunteerism. Not all programs are free but the fees for many classes are $3 to $4.

In addition, the Senior Center houses a nutrition program at lunch available to those who desire a hot meal for a requested donation of $3 for those 60-plus (and their spouses) and a fee of $3.75 for those 59 and younger. You do not need to be a member of the association to participate in the nutrition program.

The Association is proud that the Culver City Senior Center is the first recipient of the “Champion of the West Award” awarded by the California State Parks and Recreations Department to a Senior Center that exemplified making a contribution to its community as well as to the lives of its Senior Citizens.

From Dec. 12-16 and Jan. 3-13, our annual membership drive is available to returning and new members in the lobby of the building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dues are $13 payable January to December. Parking in the Center lot is an additional $5 allowing you to park if a space is available. The Association invites you to consider enriching your senior years by becoming a member for 2017. If you purchase your membership in December, you may participate in programs for the rest of December as well as through Dec. 31, 2017. However, you may join at any time during the year.
