CCHS teams prep for final push; UCLA wins title

Spring break is over and now the Culver City High School spring teams are gearing up for the final month of their season. Six out of eight spring teams are set to make the CIF playoffs and there is still hope for boy’s tennis and girls softball as the season moves into its final weeks.

The baseball team is 8-11-1 and they are 4-0 in the Ocean league which puts them in first place. Their next game is against Palos Verdes at 3:15 p.m. on April 9 and April 13, at 3:15 p.m. against Oakwood. Both games will be played at home. Girls’ softball is 4-10 and 1-1 in league play. They play their next home game against Centennial at 3:35 p.m. on April 14.

The 7-4 and 2-0 (in league) girl’s lacrosse team will play a home game against Beverly Hills on April 10, at 3 p.m. and they travel to Beverly Hills on April 15 for a 3:30 p.m. contest. The boy’s lacrosse team is 6-3 and their next home game is against Corona April 13, at 6 p.m.

The boys’ volleyball team is 11-4 overall and they are 4-0 in the Ocean league which is good enough for first place. Their next games are on the road in the DaVinci Tournament on April 11. They have three games on April 11, in the tournament and they stay on the road when they play Beverly Hills on April 14, at 3:30 p.m.

They boys and girls track and field teams will be in action this Saturday in the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on April 11, and they have a meet against Santa Monica on Senior Day on April 15, at 3:30 p.m. The 2-7 boys’ tennis team has a home match against Inglewood on April 16 and April 17. Both matches will start at 2:30 p.m.

LAFC’s Heung-Min Son, middle, is on the move as he cuts through two defenders during a home match this year at BMO Stadium. LAFC is in first place in the Western Conference with a record of 5-1. Their next home match is April 19, at 4 p.m. against the San Jose Earthquakes.

UCLA point guard Kiki Rice had an outstanding season. She was the leader on the court. The Bruins won the National Championship last Sunday when they ran past South Carolina 79-51 in Phoenix. 

Gianna Kneepkens, No. 8, drives around a pick set by Angela Dugalic during a NCAA  Regional game at UCLA. They Bruins finished the season 37-1 and the won 31games in a row to finish the season. They were also Big 10 champions with a record of 18-0.
