The 21-9 Culver City Lady Centaurs High School basketball team traveled 120 miles to the San Diego area to take on La Jolla High School and won the game 50-39 Tuesday. They advanced to the second round of the 32-team Division III State Regional playoffs. On Thursday, March 6, the 10th-seeded Centaurs will take another bus ride to Woodland Hills to face No. 2 seed El Camino Real. That game will start at 7 p.m. If they win on Thursday, they play Saturday March 8.
Culver City had not played a game since Feb. 22, when they were beaten by Cerritos 57-37 in the CIF semi-finals. Now they are moving on in the State Regionals. Cerritos was beaten last Tuesday in the same State Regional. That’s the way the ball bounces in sports. “I am just happy for our players, the school and the Culver City community,” said Culver City head coach Julian Anderson in a phone interview Tuesday right after the game.
Switching sports, the Culver City track and field teams came out in full force last Saturday for the annual Culver City Invitational. Although there were 25 high school teams competing the Centaurs were able to show that they will be a track program to watch in 2025.
“Overall, the meet was very successful,” said Culver City track coach Jahmal Wright. “Our teams made a good showing. It was a good representation showing who we are as a track and field team.”
Wright and his coaches pride themselves on putting their best foot forward. “It’s good for us to be able to host an event like this and showcase our athletes and invite other schools.”
Their next will be Saturday at the Redondo Nike Invitational and their next home meet will be Wednesday, March 12, at 3:30 p.m. against Hamilton and El Segundo.
