Culver City’s football team outlasted 15 teams on Saturday July 11, to win the Culver City High School’s annual Passing Tournament. It was a great day for the Culver City football team. “We had a busy day,” said Jahmal Wright, Culver City High School’s head football coach. “There were a lot of moving parts. It was a good event and our team played well. We played seven games and I was really proud of the team’s conditioning and toughness.”
Summer passing tournaments are mainly an opportunity to showcase the skills of quarterbacks, receivers and running backs but Culver City’s 2026 tournament brought forth a whole new element. This year the coaching staff put together things that featured the linemen. Events like tug-of-war, relay races and weightlifting put the spotlight on the linemen. “The linemen did not win the lineman challenge, but they did an excellent job,” said Wright.
“It was a complete team effort but some of the players that stood out that day were quarterback Nicholas Hoang,” said Wright. “He was consistent the whole day. Defensive back and receiver Evan Powell did a really good job on both sides of the ball. He made a big impact in the games.”
Other players that played well according to Wright were linebacker Damarion Boyd and receivers CJ Bledsoe and Kai Dawson. “CJ was the best receiver for us in the tournament and Kai was very consistent making plays,” said Wright.
The Centaurs report to fall training camp on Tuesday, August 4, and their first game of the 2026 season will be at home against King/Drew on August 28, at 7 p.m.
