CC Woman’s Club approaching 100 years of community service

It was about 100 years ago when Culver City became known as the Heart of Screenland with the arrivals of MGM Studios, Hal Roach Studios, and Selznick Studios. But while the film industry was stretching its wings throughout the city, another organization was also taking its first steps into a bigger world—the Culver City Woman’s Club.

Founded in 1920 by Lillian Culver, wife of city founder Harry Culver, the Culver City Woman’s Club grew to where it is now one of the oldest philanthropic and social organizations in the city.

The Club annually funds scholarships to Culver City High School graduating seniors and supports many local charities, including Meals on Wheels, the USO, the Culver-Palms YMCA Summer Camp Program, foster children, and veteran groups. The club is part of the California Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Club, one of the oldest and largest volunteer organizations in the world.

The Culver City Woman’s Club hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including fashion shows, ice cream socials, and yard sales.

At their monthly meetings, the Culver City Woman’s Club hosts speakers from various organizations. Members also visit museums, art galleries, and other places of interest. They also host Women Out Walking (WOW) groups, who walk together twice a week, as well as crocheting groups and lunches at local restaurants.

Last month, the Culver City Woman’s Club had its annual Spring Fiesta Fundraiser at Casa Sanchez Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles. There was also a fashion show, silent auction, door prizes and shopping with vendors Karen Michelle (clothes and accessories), City Sprite (soaps, lotions, and candles), and Essential Chocolate Desserts.

The Culver City Woman’s Club plans an ice cream social in early summer and a picnic in August.
