Unlucky for some, but not for Culver City–Friday 13th will see Bruce Ray White bring his blend of Americana, country, folk, bluegrass, blues and boogie to the Cinema Bar, so he sat down with the News to discuss his goings on.
When did you start writing and performing music, and when did it get serious?
I started late. I didn’t start learning guitar until I was 27. I started performing in my 30s (I’m old now!) I’ve always been more of an Interpreter than a songwriter. I have just a handful of songs that I’ve written (a couple of them are pretty good, though).
What are your career highlights so far?
Just being able to play with the good musicians around. Sometimes I feel very fortunate to live in L.A. to be able to play with some of these people. A few times, I’ve played back home in Louisiana where I grew up – that was always fun, but I much prefer to play with a band.
What have you been up to since we last spoke in 2022?
Getting old! Building guitars and playing music.
Do you have any new recorded music available?
We’re a bar band only so far–the current band has been together for two years, so we’re starting to sound really good. No recordings of this band yet. It’s hard enough just getting four guys in the same room–like herding cats.
What are your memories of your last Cinema Bar show?
We had a great crowd–the bar had been closed for a month, and myself and my bandmates were really happy to be playing, and it showed and sounded like it.
What can we expect from the set this time?
Well, since the last time we spoke, the band now plays every second Friday of the month, and we’ve been doing that for a couple of years unless something comes up. For instance, in March, we’re playing on the second Saturday, March 14, because there’s an out of town band that’s playing our regular night.
What else do you have coming up?
So far, just the Cinema Bar every second Friday, except for March.
The event takes place at 9 p.m. on Friday, February 13. Visit thecinemabar.com for more info.
